How to Add Citations in MonsterWriter

Applies to: Documents editor

MonsterWriter's citation system lets you add fully formatted references by pasting an identifier — a DOI, ISBN, arXiv ID, URL, or PubMed ID. The tool fetches all fields automatically from live academic databases. You can also enter references manually.

Auto-fill a citation from an identifier

  1. 1

    Place your cursor

Click in your document where you want the citation to appear.

  2. 2

    Open the citation dialog

Click the citation button in the toolbar, or use the keyboard shortcut.

  3. 3

    Paste the identifier

Paste a DOI (e.g. 10.1038/s41586-020-2945-x), an ISBN, an arXiv ID (e.g. 2303.08774), a PubMed ID, or a URL. MonsterWriter supports all of these.

  4. 4

    MonsterWriter fetches the details

Author, title, journal, year, volume, issue, pages, and publisher are all filled in automatically.

  5. 5

    Confirm and insert

Review the details and click Insert. The in-text citation appears in your document and the full reference is added to the bibliography automatically.

Manual entry

If you don't have an identifier, open the citation dialog and switch to manual entry. Select the source type (journal article, book, website, etc.) and fill in the fields yourself.

Changing citation styles

Citation styles — APA, Harvard, MLA, IEEE, Chicago, Vancouver, and more — are applied at render time, not stored in your document. To switch styles, go to your document settings and choose a style from the list. All citations and bibliography entries update instantly.
